چکیده

Traffic congestion and automobile accidents are two of the leading causes of decreased standard of living and lost productivity in urban settings. Recent advances in artificial intelligence suggest that autonomous vehicle navigation will be possible in the near future. Individual cars can now be equipped with features of autonomy such as adaptive cruise control, GPS-based route planning (Rogers, Flechter, & Langley 1999; Schonberg et al. 1995), and autonomous steering (Pomerleau 1993). Once individual cars become autonomous, many of the cars on the road will have such capabilities, thus opening up the possibility of autonomous interactions among multiple vehicles. In earlier work, we proposed a novel Multiagent Systems– based approach to alleviating traffic congestion and collisions, specifically at intersections (Dresner & Stone 2005). In this work, we make three further contributions. First, we augment our existing intersection control mechanism to allow use by human drivers with minimal additional infrastructure. Second, we show that this hybrid mechanism offers performance and safety benefits over traditional traffic light systems. Finally, we show that at each stage, there exists an incentive to use autonomous vehicles over traditional vehicles. All work is fully implemented and tested in our custom simulator and we present experimental results to support its effectiveness.

Learning Policy Selection for Autonomous Intersection Management

Few aspects of modern life inflict as high a cost on society as traffic congestion and automobile accidents. Current work in AI and Intelligent Transportation Systems aims to replace human drivers with autonomous vehicles capable of safely and efficiently navigating through the most hazardous city streets. Once such vehicles are common, interactions between multiple vehicles will be possible. T...

A Protocol for Mixed Autonomous and Human-Operated Vehicles at Intersections

Connected and autonomous vehicle technology has advanced rapidly in recent years. These technologies create possibilities for highly efficient, AI-based, transportation systems. One such system is the Autonomous Intersection Management (AIM), an intersection management protocol designed for the time when all vehicles are fully autonomous and connected. Experts, however, anticipate a long transi...

Autonomous Intersection Management for Semi-Autonomous Vehicles

Recent advances in autonomous vehicle technology will open the door to highly efficient transportation systems in the future, as demonstrated by Autonomous Intersection Management, an intersection control protocol designed for fully autonomous vehicles. We, however, anticipate there will be a long transition period during which most vehicles have some but not all capabilities of fully autonomou...

Intelligent Intersection Management of Autonomous Traffic Using Discrete-Time Occupancies Trajectory

In this paper, a novel approach, called the Discrete-Time Occupancies Trajectory (DTOT), is proposed for intersection management of autonomous traffic in which all vehicles in the system are Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) and capable of wireless Vehicle-to-Intersection (V2I) communication. The main advantage of the proposed DTOT-based intersection management is that it enables us to utilize the spac...

Intersection Management Protocol for Mixed Autonomous and Human-Operated Vehicles

This article proposes a Hybrid Autonomous Intersection Management protocol (H-AIM), which is a variant of the formerly presented Autonomous Intersection Management protocol (AIM). Similar to AIM, H-AIM coordinates the right of way for connected and autonomous vehicles through an intersection in a way that is far more efficient compered to traditional traffic signals. Unlike AIM, H-AIM is shown ...
